Our spring maintenance is now under way with the course starting to take shape as we are seeing growth in many areas now.

GREENS – The height of cut on the greens from 30th March is 4.5mm. This height of cut was not achieved until 14th April last year so we have had a good start. The greens were verti drained to a depth of 9 inches during the week commencing 19th March which has helped dry them out and increase root development. The greens have been sprayed with a fungicide to protect against turf disease. They have also been fed with a granular spring fertiliser on Friday 6th April to increase growth and ‘kick start’ the grass coverage. A further granular fertiliser will be applied in May called ‘Thatch Eater’. This product has had great results on several courses with a similar profile to ours…..wet and low lying with higher levels of thatch on greens. This product ‘eats away’ at the thatch layer throughout the playing season releasing locked up nutrients, further feeding greens and also increases water percolation rates through the soil profile.

TEES- The tees will all be sprayed with a mosskiller and verti-cut to rip out the dead moss. They are being cut at a height of 12mm, along with the aprons around the greens. The tees are being divoted twice weekly have also been fed with a spring fertiliser to increase growth and colour.

FAIRWAYS – Our fairway scarifier has been serviced and the hope is to get it out at the start of May to rip up the moss, dead grass etc and encourage grass growth through these areas. We will continue to work our way through the fairways over the month of May.

BUNKERS – All bunkers are being flymoed, edged, weeded, tidied and are being raked regularly to keep the sand levels to a good standard.

PATHS – All paths have been sprayed with total weedkiller to clean them up and edged/strimmed to keep their appearance tidy.

DRAINAGE – The 2 ditches to the left of the 13th fairway are being filled up to ground level to get them back in play as pipe work has been completed. The drainage work on the 10th fairway over the winter months has made a big difference and the area drains much quicker once the heavy rain has stopped as all the main pipes now run cleanly down to the burn.

OTHER MAINTENANCE – All ditches on the course have been flymoed, strimmed and are brushed weekly to keep the tidy.

Many grass areas under trees around the course have been selected to be sprayed with total weedkiller in an effort to reduce the workload of the greenstaff and increase the speed of play.

This year we are introducing an ‘intermediate’ cut of fairway between the edge of the fairways and the rough. This will be one width of our fairway machine at a height of 25mm (1 inch). The fairways are at a height of 16mm with the rough at 50mm (2 inches) so this intermediate cut will not punish the slightly off line tee shot and golfers will still be presented with a good lie. This will also be aesthetically pleasing and increase the definition around the course.
